Producer Focus - Castell d'Encus

Castell d'Encus is a truly exciting project from Priorat legend Raul Bobet (owner of the brilliant Ferrer Bobet).  While searching for suitable land in the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees for a different project back in 2001 (he was considering global warming back then and looking for cooler sites), he discovered a stunning estate at about 1000m above sea level dating back to the 12th century.  Farming organically, he planted 23 hectares of high density vines - mainly international varieties - and also discovered nine medieval rock fermenters in the vineyards, embedded in the rocky hillside.  Raul restored these back to working order and ferments many of his wines in them today, something quite rare and a real nod to traditional methods.  The results are incredible - purity of fruit, high natural acidity, superb length and mouthfeel, and great ageing potential.  They rightly receive much critical acclaim and we cannot recommend the wines highly enough.

Ekam - a stunning blend of Albarino and Riesling, this is an aromatic wine with loads happening on both the nose and palate.  Click here for our full tasting note but, in a nutsehell, it's a thrilling, complex wine with the twin attributes of tasting great now but with the ability to age and improve for some years yet.

Thalarn - is the estate's 100% Syrah, which is made in a pure, lean style that's more akin to top quality Cote Rotie than it is to Barossa Shiraz.  Very elegant, fresh and complex, this again drinks well young but rewards a bit of patience.  Click here for further details.
