time with him) and so, when choosing a wine to pair with our beef the other day, The Kirche seemed like a good idea.  After all, this vintage has just won an International Wine Challenge Trophy (for best Barossa blend) so worth checking out, I thought.  And, wow, what a wine!  I've drunk some sublime wines over the past year but this is as enjoyable and memorable as any of them. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e50% Shiraz, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon from old Barossa vines, co-fermented and then aged in French and American oak, as soon as you nose the wine, you know it's going to be great.  It has great aromatics with fresh morello cherry, blackberry, plum and blueberry, plus hints of spice and toast.  On the palate it is so silky and plush that you can't wait to take another sip, revealing that pure ripe fruit (naturally ripe, not confected) along with subtle notes of tobacco, chocolate, spice, toasty oak and a nice minerally earthiness.  It is full but so fresh and balanced that you don't notice the 14.5% alcohol and the plush tannins and fresh acidity ensure everything is in harmony.  This is a stunner, drinking beautifully now but with the structure to develop for another 5+ years at least.  If you'd told me it was the same price as the Melton Nine Popes (£75 a bottle), I'd have said it's worth every penny.  It's just over half the price of that so The light Pinot Noir-esque colour disguises what a subtly powerful and complex wine this is, packed with red cherries and berries, earth, smoke, savoury herbs, pepper and spice, with bright acidity and tannins with a little bit of grip suggesting long ageing potential. I know the 2019 is possibly too early to drink but I loved it and I will certainly be laying a few bottles down in our cellar. and sometimes overlooked - wine.  La Croix Gratiot are one of the top producers in the region and since Anais Ricome took over the estate, they have gone from strength to strength.  She has overseen the transition to biodynamics and the estate was certified organic in 2021.  The wines have recently been described as \"the pinnacle of Picpoul de Pinet\".  This is a wonderfully crisp wine, full of fresh lime, lemon and grapefruit with a refreshing mouthfeel and a decent length of finish.  It's not massively complex but you don't need it to be - pedigree of the previous owners (Comando G), and the ambition of the new owners, plus the fact that the new release is under half the price of the last Comando G release, this is a highly anticipated launch.  Just 2248 bottles were produced and the bottle we drank was excellent.  Packed with fresh wild strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate, with a tiny hint of spritz, the wine has great elegance and energy as well as subtle hints of minerals, truffles and spice.  It needs to settle down a bit but all the components are there for this to develop wonderfully in bottle.  Given the new price and more enjoyable.  It's almost a cross between a Pinot Noir and a Northern Rhone Syrah given that it has a lovely white pepper note to it and it went down remarkably well with friends recently.  With lots of crunchy cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit, earthy, savoury hints, spice and liquorice - as well as that pepper - it's really moreish, balanced and long.  The acidity is fresh and the tannins have a little bit of grip so I think this will soften and develop too.  We're all still learning the ageing capabilities of English wines so this is another that we'll follow with
