complex yet rounded, silky and balanced at the same time, an iron fist in a velvet glove. Decant first for an hour or two and you find an array of aromas when you put your nose in the glass - ripe blackberry, plum and blueberry fruit with toasty oak, spice and tobacco. Certainly very inviting. Plush in the mouth with different layers of dark berry and cherry fruit along with chocolate, tobacco, five spice and mocha. The tannins are slightly chewy at this stage but that's not a bad thing and the acidity is good. The finish lasts an age and reinforces the fact that this is an exceptionally good wine. Drinking well now but with the structure to improve in bottle over the next decade.

Kaiken
Default during dinner and sharing old vintages of their wines alongside other Australian legends, such as Wendouree. A truly memorable evening spent with a passionate couple who both produce world class wines. Jeff may be better known for his Rieslings, but his Gaia - a 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc blend - has always been sensational. And something that gets better with bottle age. This vintage has all the brambly black fruit and dark cherry expected, with tobacco and spice, then it explodes on the palate with fresh, sweet berry fruit, leafy tobacco, eucalyptus, coffee bean and bay leaf. The tannins are present but fine grained, it has good acidity and a firm structure, as well as a long, persistent finish. It's all there to be enjoyed now but does age gracefully for 10-15 years, often more. It's a stunner and highly recommended.

5 BOTTLES raspberry, tobacco leaf and clove. There’s ripe Barossa fruit but this is restrained and balanced with a freshness and finesse which you often find with cooler Eden Valley wines. This makes for a initially think. There's the trademark Cabernet blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, ripe and juicy, but there's quite a lot of subtlety sitting in harmony alongside it - leafy tobacco, eucalyptus, cedar, spice, green pepper, toasty oak and dark chocolate. Pretty complex for a wine at this price. With juicy acidity and slightly grippy tannins, plus a decent length of finish, any wine that think. There's plenty of raspberry, red cherry and cranberry notes along with floral hints on the nose, but on the palate, the first thing you note after the red fruits is the minerally, crushed family who purchased the estate in 2002, they are situated right in the heart of Bolgheri, with vineyards next to the iconic Ornellaia. Il Seggio is the name of the creek that runs through Bolgheri and this is a Bordeaux blend that massively over delivers. Merlot is always the dominant grape variety in Il Seggio so it's packed with juicy plum and berry fruit, but the other varieties add depth, richness and backbone making it quite a serious wine. It's got plenty going on - brambly fruit, cassis, plum, damson, leafy tobacco, clove, tar - framed by silky tannins and bright acidity. It's long, balanced and complex and we've found that a few years in bottle help it soften and round out, making it velvety and quite the little stunner (we're finishing the 2014 now).

337 bottles made). And I was blown away by how good it is. Lovely ripe red fruit - raspberry mainly - with hints of darker cherry, sweet spice and a peppery spice, medium bodied with an elegant structure and freshness, minerals and a bit of tobacco. A good length of finish as well and still fresh, despite some good bottle age. Silky, refined, delicious and a bit Josep have worked tirelessly to transform the vineyards and they are now certified biodynamic. The results are that the fruit now has a beautiful purity and intensity and, as the old saying goes, you can only make good wine if you've got good fruit. You've still got to handle this fruit properly in the winery though, so they've moved to low intervention, whole cluster ferments, natural yeasts, old oak and a dramatic reduction in sulphur use, simply letting the top quality fruit shine through.

And the finished product is superb, understated yet smooth and blackberry, damson, plum, black cherry, pepper, nutmeg, clove, dark chocolate, bay leaf, black olive, warm spice, vanilla - I could keep going on as there's so many little nuances. The tannins are ripe and juicy, the acidity is well balanced and the finish still lingers after 2 minutes. It's a blockbuster Aussie Shiraz but it is so harmonious and balanced that the bottle disappeared a bit too quickly for such a stunning wine. On track to be one of Australia's new icons, grab a few bottles before the price goes crazy.

3 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0591/8729/8470/products/Powell_SonSchulzKoonungaHillShiraz.jpg?v=1631541715
cesar-marquez-pico-ferreira
Cesar Marquez Pico Ferreira 2021

Case discounts (can be mixed cases)
5% off 6 bottles (£38.00 each)
10% off 12+ bottles (£36.00 each)

2021 / Bierzo / Spain

Mencia, Alicante Bouschet / 13.5% / organic

Cesar Marquez is a young winemaker with deep family roots in the Bierzo region. He started his business in 2015 and he works old vineyards in the region (some of the vines are over 100 years old), all the while exploring the possibility of a Burgundy like classification for his wines. Each wine shows real vineyard character, each subtly different, and this is the sort of winemaking that we love, wines made with absolute passion and conviction.

3 BOTTLES AVAILABLE

Case discounts (can be mixed cases)
5% off 6 bottles (£24.70 each)
10% off 12+ bottles (£23.40 each)

2022 / Swartland / South Africa

Mourvedre, Syrah, Carignan, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Tannat / 14% / organic

Charles Back was a pioneer in the region when he started Spice Route back in 1998 and, along with winemaker Charl du Plessis, they've been producing fantastic wines using a "hands off" approach -
