Fontodi are one of our favourite producers and visiting their vineyards some years ago will always be a wine highlight for me. Their whole philosophy about how they treat their land and their people is truly inspirational so it's little wonder that the wines they produce are stunning. The Vigna del Sorbo is a step up from their excellent Chianti Classico, richer and deeper but still maintaining an elegance and complexity to balance the dark fruit. As well as the ripe blackberries, cherries and plums, there are lovely notes of smoke, leather, tea leaves, herbs and spice, all encased in a firm but fine tannic structure, with bright acidity and great length. Although the wine drinks well from release, it has the ability to evolve for up to 15 years. A stunner.
