Decades is a new venture between two Roseworthy College friends - Steve Flamsteed (one of Australia's most esteemed winemakers who headed up Giant Steps for years) and Brad Rogers (founder of Byron Bay brewery Stone & Wood). It was a long held ambition to make wine together so when they discovered a special 2.5 hectare vineyard in the Upper Coal River Valley (near to Tolpuddle), their dreams were realised. This is a region with the potential for world class Chardonnay & Pinot Noir and this is what Decades have set out to achieve.
This vintage (their second) is the first time the wines have been available in the UK and, with only 2100 bottles made, only the lucky few will get to drink them. We were blown away by both this and the Chardonnay when we drank them so we're delighted to share them with you. It's a Pinot Noir with real poise and elegance, even at this early stage, and it gets better with each sip. An inviting nose of mulberries, cherries and plums with spicy notes leads you into a velvety palate that showcases both red and black fruits along with spice, liquorice, subtle toasty oak and savoury hints. The tannins are plush and juicy and there is good acidity so it will develop for some years in bottle. The finish, like the Chardonnay, is very persistent - always the sign of a great wine, and it's remarkably harmonious even at this early stage. Top notch.
