Aldo Conterno is one of Italy's most respected winemakers with their single vineyard wines considered to be some of the finest examples of Nebbiolo on the planet.  The downside is that some of those wines are hundreds of pounds per bottle.  Which is why we love this wine - a "mini Barolo" - which is produced from the younger vines on the estate (about 20 years old).  What you get is all the beautiful classic Barolo character - cherries, strawberries, roses and tar along with some darker fruit hints, spice, fennel and minerals.  There is a lovely structure with firm, fine tannins and juicy acidity meaning this will develop in bottle for some years yet (although drinking wonderfully now with a 2 hour decant).  Really lovely on the palate, balanced, with elegance and with a great length of flavour.  For the quality, it's terrific value.
