It's not often that we take a wine "blind" - that is, simply on recommendation without tasting it. But this, recommended by Richard Kelley MW (and South African specialist), seems to be a no brainer. It's a new project by a young SA winemaker called Sam Lambson - in fact, he has just finished his oenology degree at the University of Stellenbosch - but he's worked harvests with some of the regions top winemakers, including Chris Alheit, and he's got a passion for Northern Rhone Syrahs. So, he's set about making stunning Syrah from some of South Africa's cool climate areas and, putting every bit of spare cash he had into his wines, he is now creating a reputation for himself and his tiny production wines are as rare as hens teeth. As the name suggests, his approach is about quality wine with minimal intervention, handling quality fruit gently and letting nature take its course. And it's probably the most memorable wine I've had in the last few years - absolutely sublime.
