Patrick Sullivan is well known in Australia as one of the country's top producers of Chardonnay, particularly site specific cool climate Chardonnay. He has vineyards in both Gippsland and the Yarra Valley and he looks for volcanic soils as this gives the minerality he's looking for in his wines. Whilst he's currently under the radar in the UK, it won't take long for his wines to gain traction given the quality. Ada River is his flagship wine, made from a 1 hectare vineyard in the foothills of Mount Baw Baw (great name!), planted in 1982 on those volcanic soils and protected by dense forests. The wine is beautiful with notes of white peach, citrus, nuts, spice and smoke with a delicious minerality through the core. The acidity is bright and balanced and it's a wine with the perfect amount of richness and elegance. Really very fine indeed and exactly the sort of wine that goes straight into my personal cellar. I'd recommend you do the same.
