2023 / Piekenierskloof / South Africa
Grenache / 13% / sustainable
I have to be honest - I sometimes struggle with straight Grenache. I don't know why, but it's just not really my thing. So I was really very pleasantly surprised when I tasted this wine. From the Piekenierskloof region (about 50km north of Swartland) - apparently the new star region for top wines - this is made by Rudiger Gretschel (winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof and cellar master at Reyneke) from old bush vines planted at 600m altitude. Rather than a full on turbo charged Grenache, this is a more elegant, aromatic wine, full of silky red fruits (wild strawberry, red cherry) with a rose petal hint and plenty of attractive savouriness. It's fresh with crunchy acidity and silky tannins, finishing long with a subtle spiciness. Almost Pinot Noir-esque, which is perhaps why I like it so much. Top stuff.
