Apostolos Thymiopoulos is regarded as the Grand Master of Xinomavro and the fabulous Earth & Sky, first released in 2005, has become the wine for which he is best known.  It is made from two different vineyards - Trilofos (the "Earth") at 100-200m, bringing ripeness and depth; and Fytia (the "Sky") at 400-650m, which adds freshness and nuance.  Farmed organically and adopting some biodynamics, we can see why its a modern classic with the lovely mix of red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, cherry, pomegranate) and black (blackberry, cassis).  Along with this, there are notes of herbs, pepper, leather, sweet spice and minerals, all wrapped in a silky palate with fresh acidity and fine tannins.  Refined, powerful and full of character, it's also a brilliant quality to price ratio.  If you love Nebbiolo and haven't yet tried Xinomavro, I think you'd like it.
