Given that we're constantly asked what our favourite wines are, we're creating our Ultimate Wine List - which is basically a list of the best wines from every region across the world. We're keeping the list to one wine from each producer and sometimes it may not even be the producer's top wine that makes the list but we'll explain our reasons for each wine as we go along. Please note, it's not only wines that we stock (although a lot we do) - it's an ever evolving list of wines that deserve their place. And tasting brilliant wines is not a bad hobby.
We post all the wines on Instagram (@elementarywine) if you wish to follow but please do check back here as we add the latest wines each month. A quiet month on the UWL front but here's what we've enjoyed in July....
No. 41 - Sine Qua Non Profuga (California, USA) - we've been drinking some sensational wines on this list but this is the best one yet (in fact, one of the finest wines I've ever drunk). It was epic - ethereal, rich and powerful yet elegant, complex and harmonious. The 16% abv not noticed such was the harmony and balance. And, even with a 4 hour decant, it kept evolving in the glass - dark berry and cherry to start, then wild strawberry and plum as the wine evolved. Plus spice, minerals, pepper, liquorice, garrigue, leather, truffles, mocha and more. Truly exceptional.
No. 40 - Petrolo Galatrona (Tuscany, Italy) - widely considered as Tuscany's answer to Petrus, we enjoyed this 100% Merlot over my birthday weekend. And whilst I don't drink Petrus enough to comment, this is certainly a cracking wine. Deep and rich with velvety tannins and good acidity, it showcases plum, damson and blackberry along with subtle toasty oak, hints of tobacco, dark chocolate and some tertiary character coming through. Excellent balance and length and certainly built for the long haul. Excellent.
No. 39 - Marie-Therese Chappaz Grain Arvine de Fully (Valais, Switzerland) - known as the Queen of the Valais, Maire-Therese is a Swiss winemaking icon and a champion of biodynamic farming. This is a beautiful Petite Arvine, a grape variety I really like, and I didn't make extensive notes as I was too busy enjoying the wine. "Stunning, sweet fruited but dry; honey, apricot, citrus, pear, minerals, fresh, complex, long". What we call a concise note.
