Given that we're constantly asked what our favourite wines are, we're creating our Ultimate Wine List - which is basically a list of the best wines from every region across the world. We're keeping the list to one wine from each producer and sometimes it may not even be the producer's top wine that makes the list but we'll explain our reasons for each wine as we go along. Please note, it's not only wines that we stock (although a lot we do) - it's an ever evolving list of wines that deserve their place. And tasting brilliant wines is not a bad hobby.
We'll post all the wines on Instagram (@elementarywine) if you wish to follow but please do check back here as we add the latest wines each month. Here's what we've enjoyed in June....
No. 38 - Pierro Chardonnay (Margaret River, Australia) - we do love great Chardonnay here at Elementary HQ and this is one of Australia's best. I think that Pierro are still a bit under the radar in the UK as this is still brilliant value for such an outstanding wine. Superbly balanced with vibrant citrus and peach fruit, it's buttery and creamy in a very elegant way. Fresh and balanced with a mineral edge, good acidity and excellent length, if you haven't tried yet, I would urge you to do so. Worthy of a place on any fine wine list.
No. 37 - T-Oinos Clos Stegasta Asyrtiko (Tinos, Greece) - no, we haven't spelt the name incorrectly! T-Oinos only use one "s" in the wine name because they use the French spelling of Assyrtiko. This wine is from the island of Tinos and is regarded as one of Greece's top whites. The Clos Stegasta vineyard is a world heritage site, a beautiful but barren landscape where the vines have to dig deep to find moisture. This is a wonderfully pure wine, with lemon, tangerine and peach fruit, bright acidity, salinity and minerality, then a subtle creaminess on the finish. Complex, long and really excellent, we enjoyed overlooking Mirabello Bay on a recent trip to Crete. Equally outstanding in other locations.
No. 36 - Roagna Barbaresco Paje (Piedmont, Italy) - one of Piedmont's iconic estates, this is Nebbiolo at its finest. Perfumed wild strawberry and red cherry, floral, earthy, leathery, minerals and tar. Silky and complex with a fine tannic structure and vibrant acidity, this will develop wonderfully for 20-30 years. The Paje vineyard is one of their finest and the wine reflects that. Damn fine!
No. 35 - Georg Breuer Berg Schlossberg Riesling (Rheingau, Germany) - we've been enjoying some excellent Riesling lately and this is up there with the best of them. The Georg Breuer estate was started in 1880 (by Peter Breuer) and is now run by his great granddaughter, Theresa, who has introduced organic principles into the vineyards. The wines have reached a new level and this is a beauty - bone dry with crystalline lime and lemon, apple, peach, honey, a hint of kerosene and minerals. From a selection of the best barrels from their top vineyard, it's complex, vibrant, balanced and long. Coming soon to our portfolio.
No. 34 - Bodega El Reventon El Reventon (Sierra de Gredos, Spain) - the new release of the re-launched El Reventon, now under the ownership of Argentine wine royalty Adrianna Catena. Given the quality of the biodynamically farmed 1 hectare vineyards, the previous owners (Comando G) and the new owners, plus the fact that the latest release (2023) is half the price of the final Comando G release, this was a highly anticipated launch. Each of the 2248 bottles is packed with fresh wild strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate with a hint of spritz. The wine has great elegance and energy with minerals, truffle and spice. It needs to settle a little but all the components are there for this to develop wonderfully. A must have for any serious cellar. Available here.
