Mullineux are one of South Africa's most highly regarded producers, having been named Winery of the Year five times since 2014 by the Platter's Wine Guide. They make some of the Swartland's finest Syrah and their Schist is our favourite amongst their excellent Single Terroir range. It's a truly sensational wine that really starts to show its true quality after 10 or so years in bottle. I'm not saying you can't drink it before that - you can and it's very fine indeed - but to really see what all the fuss is about, I'd suggest opening after a decade and then for another 10+ years after that. We recently enjoyed a 2016 and the wine was youthful, vibrant and aromatic with dark bramble, cassis and cherry fruit, black pepper, spice, minerals, a hint of meatiness and black olive. With incredibly fine tannins and wonderful purity, it was by far the best Schist we have had to date and the finish went on for 2+ minutes - exceptional. So, after a few years of liking rather than loving the wine, I now understand it (it sometimes takes a while). Buy now, hide away and enjoy in the future. You can thank me later (and, by the way, this is a top rated vintage).
